Current Status of Fiber Optic KVM Project in Senegal

Current Status of Fiber Optic KVM Project in Senegal

The Senegal Fiber Optic KVM Project, including the SHARE submarine cable and national fiber network expansion, aims to enhance broadband capacity, digital inclusion, and Senegal's position as a West African ICT hub.SHARE Submarine CableThe Senegal Horn of Africa Regional Express (SHARE) is a 720-kilometer submarine fiber optic cable connecting Dakar, Senegal, to Praia, Cabo Verde, deployed by Huawei Marine Networks. The project is nearly complete, with 95% of the subsea cable installed, and is expected to provide up to 16 terabits of future internet capacity for Senegal. Initially, 100 gigabits will be available for government and operators requiring high-capacity connections. This cable represents the first direct link between Africa and Cabo Verde, enhancing international bandwidth and regional connectivity .National Fiber Network ExpansionSenegal is also expanding its terrestrial fiber optic network to improve broadband access and digital inclusion. The Ministry of Telecommunications and Digital Economy (MTCN) coordinates the extension of the national network, focusing on priority last-mile segments in regions such as Casamance and the Groundnut Basin. Technical studies and public-private partnership models are being prepared to finance these missing segments. The network supports both internet and mobile connectivity, linking major cities like Dakar, Thies, Saint-Louis, Tambacounda, and Ziguinchor, and enabling better service for urban and semi-urban areas .ICT Development and Digital StrategyThe fiber optic initiatives are part of Senegal's broader National Digital Economy Strategy 2025, which aims to make the country a regional hub for digital transformation. Goals include increasing the ICT sector's contribution to GDP, creating jobs, and expanding access to online government services and digital education. The regulatory framework is managed by the Agency for Telecommunications and Postal Regulation (ARTP), ensuring fair competition and efficient spectrum allocation. Senegal currently connects to over 40 countries via four submarine cables: Main One, Atlantis-2, SAT-3/WASC, and ACE, with ongoing efforts to integrate these with national fiber infrastructure .ImpactThe project is expected to:Boost internet speeds and reliability for government, businesses, and citizens.Enhance regional connectivity, positioning Senegal as a West African ICT hub.Support digital inclusion, particularly in underserved regions.Enable economic growth through improved access to digital services and innovation ecosystems . Overall, the Senegal Fiber Optic KVM Project represents a strategic investment in both international and domestic broadband infrastructure, combining submarine and terrestrial fiber networks to strengthen Senegal's digital economy and regional leadership in ICT.
