Optocoupler terminals serve to electrically isolate input and output circuits while transferring signals via light, with input terminals driving the LED and output terminals controlling the photodetector.Input Terminals (LED Side)The input terminals of an optocoupler are connected to a Light-Emitting Diode (LED). When a voltage is applied across these terminals, current flows through the LED, causing it to emit infrared light proportional to the input signal . These terminals are typically labeled as anode (+) and cathode (−). The LED converts the electrical signal into light, which is the key mechanism for galvanic isolation, preventing high voltages or noise from passing directly to the output circuit .Output Terminals (Photodetector Side)The output terminals are connected to a photodetector, commonly a phototransistor, photodiode, or photo-SCR. In a phototransistor optocoupler, the terminals are usually labeled collector (C) and emitter (E). When the LED emits light, photons strike the phototransistor, generating a current between the collector and emitter, effectively reproducing the input signal on the output side without direct electrical connection . When the LED is off, the phototransistor remains non-conductive, preventing current flow, similar to an open switch .Key Functions of TerminalsInput terminals (LED anode and cathode): Convert electrical signals into light, providing isolation from the output circuit.Output terminals (phototransistor collector and emitter): Convert light back into an electrical signal, allowing the output circuit to respond to the input without direct electrical contact.Isolation: The terminals ensure that high-voltage spikes or noise on the input side do not damage sensitive components on the output side .Signal transfer: The terminals enable both AC and DC signal transfer across the isolation barrier, depending on the optocoupler type .Practical NotesSome optocouplers have four or six pins, with dual LEDs or phototransistors for more complex signal handling.The current-transfer ratio (CTR), defined as the ratio of output current to input LED current, is a critical parameter influenced by the terminals' design and operating conditions .Proper connection of terminals is essential for reliable operation, as reversing the LED polarity or miswiring the phototransistor can prevent signal transfer. In summary, the input terminals drive the LED to emit light, and the output terminals detect this light to produce a corresponding electrical signal, achieving signal transfer while maintaining electrical isolation between circuits .
