Fiber optic cable outer sheath model

Fiber optic cable outer sheath model

Fiber optic cable outer sheaths come in various models such as PVC, PE, LSZH, HDPE, and armored types, each designed for specific environmental and mechanical requirements.Common Outer Sheath MaterialsPVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) PVC is widely used for indoor fiber optic cables due to its low cost, good mechanical protection, and resistance to moisture and UV radiation. It is suitable for general-purpose applications but has poor flame-retardant properties and produces dense smoke when burned, making it less ideal for high fire-risk areas . PE (Polyethylene) PE sheaths are odorless, non-toxic, and highly resistant to low temperatures (down to -100°C), chemicals, and UV exposure. They are commonly used for outdoor cables. Variants include MDPE (medium density) and HDPE (high density), with HDPE offering superior durability and UV resistance for long-term outdoor deployment . LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) LSZH sheaths are designed for fire safety, producing minimal smoke and no toxic gases when burned. They provide good tensile strength, oil resistance, and high-pressure resistance, making them suitable for indoor environments like data centers, hospitals, and public buildings where fire regulations are strict . Plenum-rated Sheaths Plenum sheaths, typically made from fluoropolymers such as FEP or PTFE, are used in air-handling spaces like ducts and plenums. They offer excellent flame-retardant properties and mechanical protection, ideal for indoor installations requiring high fire safety . Armored Sheaths For harsh outdoor conditions, armored sheaths combine mechanical protection with environmental resistance. For example, some outdoor cables use ECCS steel tape armor combined with an HDPE outer layer, providing crush resistance, rodent protection, and UV stability .Selection ConsiderationsIndoor vs Outdoor: PVC and LSZH are common indoors, while HDPE and armored sheaths are preferred outdoors.Fire Safety: LSZH and plenum-rated sheaths are essential in fire-sensitive areas.Mechanical Protection: Armored sheaths or reinforced PVC/PE provide crush and rodent resistance.Flexibility: LDPE or soft PVC sheaths allow tighter bend radii, useful in installations with frequent handling . Choosing the right outer sheath model depends on the deployment environment, regulatory requirements, and mechanical or chemical stresses the cable will encounter.
