Unlike traditional electronic repeaters, which require optical-electrical-optical (O-E-O) conversion, optical amplifiers work entirely with light, reducing latency, improving efficiency, and extending transmission distances . They are essential in long-haul fiber links, Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) systems, and submarine cables, maintaining signal strength over hundreds or thousands of kilometers .How Optical Amplifiers WorkOptical amplifiers operate on the principle of stimulated emission. A pump laser excites ions in a doped fiber, raising them to a higher energy state. When the optical signal passes through, these excited ions release energy as photons that match the signal's wavelength, phase, and direction, effectively amplifying the signal . This process allows the signal to be strengthened without electrical conversion, preserving signal integrity and reducing noise.Types of Optical AmplifiersErbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA): The most widely used type, EDFAs use a silica fiber doped with erbium ions.
