Aggregation Switch Setup Steps

Aggregation Switch Setup Steps

Configuring an aggregation switch involves stacking (if applicable), setting up routing and multicast, and configuring link aggregation for redundancy and load balancing.1. Pre-Configuration ChecklistBefore starting, ensure the following:Switches are factory default and running supported firmware (e.g., AOS-CX 10.7 or above for Aruba) .Reserved auto-stacking ports are used if stacking is required.Physical connectivity is consistent across the deployment to minimize configuration variations .Console access is available for initial setup.2. Switch Stacking (if applicable)Press the mode button on the switch to designate the conductor; wait for it to reboot.Press the mode button on additional members until the LED displays STK.Verify LED states: Flashing green indicates conductor, flashing orange indicates joining or error, solid green indicates operational .Only connect uplinks to the network after stacking is complete to avoid offline stacking issues.3. Global Routing and Multicast ConfigurationConfigure OSPF globally with area 0, enable passive-interface default, and enable graceful-restart. Assign a unique router-id for each switch using a pre-allocated loopback IP .Configure multicast routing globally and enable active-active mode.Create loopback interfaces matching the OSPF router-id, enable OSPF in area 0, and enable PIM sparse mode on the interface .Configure point-to-point routed-only ports (ROPs) for connections to the core and set up routed-transit VLANs between aggregation VSX pairs.4. Link Aggregation ConfigurationDecide between static LAG or LACP:Static LAG requires manual configuration on both ends and does not provide automatic failover .LACP dynamically manages aggregation, provides automatic failover, and ensures both ends agree on settings .Configure ports consistently across the aggregation group:STP settings (enable/disable, priority, cost)VLANs (permitted VLANs, PVID)Port attributes (speed, duplex, link type) .LACP modes:Active: sends LACP packets to initiate negotiation.Passive: responds only to LACP packets from the partner .Ensure the number of ports in the aggregation group does not exceed device limits (e.g., 8 ports for static, 12 for dynamic LAG) .5. Configuration DeploymentUse a centralized configuration tool (e.g., HPE Aruba Central MultiEdit) to apply configuration chunks to multiple switches simultaneously .Modify device-specific parameters such as router-ids and loopback IPs individually.Verify configuration consistency and operational status after deployment.6. VerificationCheck OSPF adjacency and routing tables.Verify PIM and multicast routing functionality.Confirm LAG/LACP status and ensure traffic is balanced across aggregated links.Monitor switch logs and LED indicators for errors or misconfigurations. Following these steps ensures that aggregation switches are properly stacked, routed, and aggregated for high availability, redundancy, and efficient traffic distribution across the network.
