Native earth backfill above the pipe or cable zone should be fine-grained, free of large rocks, clods, or clay balls, and graded so that at least 40% passes a No. 4 sieve .Safety and Quality MeasuresExcavation and backfilling must comply with safety regulations, including trench shoring for depths exceeding 1.2 m, protection of existing utilities, and monitoring by a supervisor and HSE officer .
