Simplified diagram of a UPS power supply system

A UPS system diagram illustrates the flow of power through a rectifier, battery, inverter, and static switch to ensure uninterrupted AC supply to connected loads.Overview of a UPS SystemA UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) is designed to provide immediate backup power during a main power failure and to protect sensitive equipment from voltage fluctuations, spikes, and frequency instability . The system typically consists of the following key components:Rectifier/Charger: Converts incoming AC power to DC to charge the battery and supply the inverter simultaneously .Battery Bank: Stores DC energy to provide backup power when the main supply fails .Inverter: Converts DC from the battery back into AC to supply the connected load .Static Switch: Automatically switches between mains power and battery power to ensure seamless operation .Load: The devices or systems that require continuous power, such as computers, servers, or industrial equipment.Typical UPS System DiagramIn a double-conversion on-line UPS, the AC input is first converted to DC by the rectifier, which charges the battery and powers the inverter. The inverter then converts DC back to AC for the load. During a power outage, the rectifier stops, and the battery supplies DC to the inverter, which continues to provide AC to the load without interruption . A static switch ensures that if the UPS fails, the load can be bypassed to the main AC supply. For off-line UPS, the load is normally powered directly from the mains, and the inverter only activates when a power failure occurs. Line-interactive UPS systems include a bidirectional converter that can regulate voltage and provide backup power with minimal transfer time .Power Flow SummaryNormal Operation: AC mains → Rectifier → DC → Inverter → AC load; Battery is charged simultaneously.Power Failure: Battery → Inverter → AC load; Rectifier is inactive.UPS Bypass/Failure: Static switch transfers load to mains or alternate source to prevent interruption . Understanding the UPS system diagram helps in troubleshooting, designing, and maintaining UPS systems, ensuring continuous power supply and protection for critical equipment .
