How to install fiber optic pigtail reels

How to install fiber optic pigtail reels

To insert a fiber optic pigtail into a reel, connect the pigtail to the drum exit port, align it with the slots, snap the cover in place, and wind the cable carefully onto the reel.Step-by-Step Instructions1. Prepare the Pigtail and Reel Ensure the fiber pigtail is clean and free of dust or debris. Use isopropyl alcohol wipes if necessary, and handle the fiber carefully to avoid bending beyond its minimum radius . Verify that the reel is properly mounted and any drum brakes or cable guides are ready for use . 2. Connect the Pigtail to the Reel Insert the bare end of the pigtail into the drum exit port of the reel. Align the fiber with the slots in the drum exit cover and push the cover horizontally until it snaps into place. If it does not snap easily, lift the trailing edge slightly while pushing to ensure proper seating . 3. Secure the Fiber Rotate the drum 180° clockwise by hand and use a zip tie to secure the fiber to the cable tie-down block. This prevents the fiber from slipping or tangling during winding . 4. Adjust Drum Tension If your reel has a drum brake, adjust it to the desired tension to control the winding speed and prevent fiber damage . 5. Wind the Pigtail onto the Reel Insert the crank handle into the side of the reel and carefully wind the fiber onto the drum. Maintain gentle tension and avoid sharp bends. If your reel has a spring rewind or cable guide, follow the specific instructions for those features . 6. Stow the Crank Handle Once the fiber is fully wound, remove the crank handle, fold it as instructed, and insert it into the chassis side plate for safe storage .Safety and Handling TipsAvoid sharp bends or kinks in the fiber, as this can cause signal loss or breakage .Do not exceed the minimum bend radius specified for your fiber type.Keep connectors clean to prevent attenuation or damage to the end-face .Handle the fiber gently; excessive pulling or crushing can alter transmission characteristics . Following these steps ensures that the fiber optic pigtail is safely and efficiently loaded onto the reel, ready for deployment or splicing in the field.
